What you expect in a diamond.
The 4 'C's of diamonds are famous, the world over, as a precise, succinct and universal way to categorise diamonds and even help in gauging value. These 'C's, namely cut, colour, clarity and carat define the most important aspects of a diamond and allow a vast amount of quantification of data to be done regarding each individual piece.
This data goes on to define the diamond and aids in assigning its price. The 4 'C's are briefly explained below.
Of course, at BHC Diamonds, we're never content with simply offering you universal standards, we believe in going beyond. Our concept of the 8 'C's, an extension to the existing 4 is explained here.
ratio
The science of creating the facets of a diamond with symmetry and adding lustre to these facets to maximise the natural refulgence of a diamond. Besides shaping the stone, the perfect cut allows light to be reflected by the diamond in the best possible way.
character
The categorisation of a diamond based on the presence of visible tints of colour in it. As colour is not desirable in a diamond, the lower the hue and tint visible to the naked eye, the better the diamond is judged to be.
nothing
The art of grading a diamond based on the lack of blemishes and inclusions visible at a 10x level of magnification. A low number, or the total absence of blemishes and inclusions greatly increase the appeal and hence the value of the diamond.
Weight
The method of measurement of a diamond based on its weight. Caratage is not a measure of size, as the perfect cut is what defines the lustre of a diamond, and sometimes a lower weight is acceptable, if it results in a perfectly cut stone.
Also, as the visible area of a diamond depends on the way it is displayed, caratage, or weight is a more precise yardstick.
